Hippopotamus in Khwai River

Hippopotamus in Khwai River

This safari leaves Maun for Moremi on the morning of the 6th July, We spend 4 nights at an exclusive site a few km from Xakanaxa and we will explore the area from Paradise Pools to Third Bridge extensively while here, depending on game movements. We will enjoy a full days boat cruise on the lagoons and waterways of this special part of the Okavango Delta whist here on the day of Full Moon, the 9th July.

Contained within an area of approximately 3900 km2, land and Delta meet to create an exceedingly picturesque preserve of floodplains. Either seasonally or perennially wet, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and riparian, riverine and mophane forests. This makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching. All naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered. Black and White Rhino have been re-introduced, now making the reserve a ‘Big Five’ destination. It is the only Game Reserve inside the Okavango Delta.

Wild dog Moremi Botswana

On the 10th July we move camp a few hours, driving via Bodumatau to Second Bridge where we spend another 3 nights in an exclusive site near the bridge. Bodumatau area is on the southern part of Xakanaxa area in the Moremi game reserve, and translates to’ a place where lions roar’.

Bodumatau is situated in a remote area on the lower reaches of the Delta, on one of the many ‘tongues’ of water that creep over the Kalahari sands – forming one of the most amazing wonders of the world.

We will enjoy our time here exploring this unique habitat.

Upside down leopard Magotho area Khwai

On the 13th July we drive another 4 hours, leaving Moremi and entering Khwai Community Concession area where we have 3 nights at an exclusive operators site called Matswiri, under beautiful Leadwood (Matswiri) Tree’s next to the water. In this area it is possible to drive off road, great for Leopard sightings. We can also do some spotlighting at night.

Khwai concession is a community-run private reserve adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve, divided from it by the Khwai River. The river attracts high concentrations of thirsty wildlife. Riverine forest lines the wide water lily and papyrus covered floodplains around the Khwai River. A myriad of colourful birdlife is found in this watery habitat that is a breeding area for many species. Away from the river and plains is thick mophane woodland dotted with pans that attract many animal species and where we often spot wild dog. The Khwai Community is running this area and all fees paid here go into the local Community providing schools, scholarships, water pumps and more.

We return to Maun on the 16th July, in time for flights to Johannesburg.
