9, 10, 11, 12 April Deception Valley, Central Kalahari Game Reserve

We collect you at 9am and we drive 4 hours to Matswere Gate where we have a simple lunch. We then drive another 1 1/2hrs to Deception Valley and set up camp there for 4 nights.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the remotest and most unspoiled parts of Africa, the Northern part of this park is one of the prime game viewing areas in Botswana. This is the largest Game Reserve in Botswana covering 52,800 km2. Nothing prepares you for the immensity of this reserve, nor its wild, mysterious beauty. There is the immediate impression of unending space, and having the entire reserve to yourself. Waist-high golden grasses seem to stretch interminably, punctuated by dwarfed trees and scrub bushes. Wide and empty pans appear as vast white stretches of saucer-flat earth, meeting a soft, blue-white sky. At night the stars utterly dominate the land; their brilliance and immediacy are totally arresting. The best time to visit is during or soon after the rains when large herds of springbok and gemsbok, as well as wildebeest, hartebeest and eland gather for good grazing. The dry season amazes with seeing what these desert adapted animals  can endure- most survive for months with no surface water to drink, getting moisture from vegetation.

During the dry season water is non-existent in the park, all water used by us must be bought in by us, as the only water is available is in Maun!! After 4 days exploring the area from Letiahau to Sunday Pan, we pack up and drive via Rakops for fuel and ice, to Makgadikgadi Pans.

13, 14 April: Khumaga, Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve

The Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve incorporates the western end of Ntwetwe Pan, extensive grasslands and acacia woodland. At its northern boundary, it meets the Nxai Pan National Park.

The Boteti River last flowed in 1992 and started flowing again past Khumaga in early 2009. During the dry season, the Boteti River in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park thrives with activity as literally thousands of Zebra and Wildebeest vie for water. There is a small public Campsite at Khumaga, and from here we can witness the huge herds and often hear their predators (mainly lions, but occasionally Cheetah, Wild Dogs and Leopard). There is also a small group of Hippopotamus that live in the river and some crocodiles that had dug caves into the banks of the dry riverbed and are now very relieved that the river is flowing again.

I do not know if the river will be flowing in April 2018 but it is pumping now. Always a great area for Raptors, Owls and Vultures.

Leopard15, 16, 17 April: Khwai, Moremi Game Reserve

On the 15th April we have a long days drive to the Moremi Game Reserve, stopping in Maun for lunch, ice, fuel and a small resupply.

Contained within an area of approximately 3900 km squared, here land and Delta meet to create an exceedingly picturesque preserve of floodplains, either seasonally or perennially wet, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and riparian, riverine and mophane forests.

This makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching, including all major naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered. It is the only Game Reserve inside the World Heritage listed Okavango Delta.

We have 3 nights here at an exclusive site near the Khwai River and will explore the area from Hippo Pools along the floodplain to Khwai and beyond extensively, depending on game movements.

18, 19, 20 April, Xakanaxa, Moremi Game Reserve

We then drive another 3 hours to an exclusive site near Xakanaxa in Moremi. We will have a full days boat cruise from Xakanaxa on the 19th April, a rare chance to visit the heronry at Godikwe for lunch. Depending on game movements and water levels we can drive to 3rd and 2nd Bridge on our game drive on the 20th April.

21 April: Departure

On the 21st April we will have a last game drive before breakfast. We can then drive back to Maun or you could take a 45 minute game flight back to Maun (flight an additional cost)
